When can I come in to try out a class? Do I have to make a reservation?

You may come in to any of the classes marked “Everyone” on our schedule. Please note we also have “Children Only” and “Teens and Adults” classes.

Our preference is you let us know before you come in for your FIRST class. If you decide we are a good fit for you please feel free to come in without making any reservations.

Do I need a uniform?

You do not need a gi (uniform) right away. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing which allows for sweat, modesty, and freedom of movement. When you decide karate is a good fit for you we will advise you about purchasing a gi.

I did karate and earned a couple of belts at someone else’s dojo. Do I have to start over? Why?

Yes. You will need to start over. Karate has many styles with significant differences in techniques, curriculum, and ranking systems. Whether you’re a novice who has only taken one or two tests or a black belt with a few degrees there will always be something to learn by putting on a white belt again. Please focus more on enjoying the journey and the benefits of lifelong learning. Shoshin, or “beginner’s mind,” is the willingness to learn new things and the humility to admit one doesn’t know everything. Shoshin serves one well not only in the dojo but also in life.

My After School or Community Center program missed a day! Is there a way to make up for it?

Please check your email for updates before holidays and during or after weather events.  After School & Community Center students are welcome to come to the Honbu Dojo for a make-up class. Please note road construction on the 509 freeway extension will cause traffic delays well into 2026 so please allow plenty of time to drive to and from the Honbu Dojo.

Why is dojo cleanup mandatory?

(Please note the following applies to Honbu Dojo students only, although it’s a good idea to leave any space better than how you found it)

Consistent participation in monthly dojo cleanup events is a requirement for all Honbu Dojo students.  This goes beyond the old proverb, “Many hands make light work.” Cleaning the dojo is a Japanese tradition which shows respect and care for the space where you train and for your fellow karateka. Participation is one of many considerations for advancement in rank. We require you to participate even when your name isn’t written on the board for testing.  It does not reflect well on you if we see a pattern of you showing up for dojo cleanup only in the month in which you tested. Please speak with sensei Herivel if you can't make it.

Testing For Your Next Belt

When will I get my next belt? How long does it take to get to black belt?

We encourage students to focus on their own journey and not compare themselves to others. Everyone is on their own timetable for growth in the art of karate. Your instructor will let you know when it is time for you to test for your next belt rank. Please trust the process and be patient with yourself.

How much does a belt test cost?

Please do not pay for a belt test if you have not been invited to test. See our Pricing page for current cost. The price of the test includes the actual belt. Price is the same for all ranks. We do not charge annual dues for keeping your rank.

YELLOW BELTS AND HIGHER please note! If you haven't already done so, please purchase fist pads.  Having your own fist pads is required once you earn rank!  EXCEPTION: If you are part of a public school after-school program this purchase is optional.

What’s the difference between a tournament and a belt test?

A tournament is a competition with participants from other karate organizations and occasionally other martial arts. You will compete for medals and trophies.

A belt test is exactly that - a test. Northwest School of Karate tests are only for Northwest School of Karate students. If you pass the test you will be awarded your new belt and certificate in about two or three weeks.

Why is attendance mandatory for belt tests?

Belt tests are an important part of the karate community. Even if you aren’t testing please consider the fact that supporting classmates is a crucial part of the karate journey. Plus it's always good to experience a test as practice for the real thing later on. If you are not testing you do not have to pay for the test. Tests are held Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Please let us know if you can't make it to a test.
